How to Balance HPMC and RDP for High-Quality Putty

In wall putty formulations, HPMC (Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose) and RDP (Redispersible Polymer Powder) are often mentioned together. However, their roles in the mix are completely different.

To create a high-performance product, you must understand how these two core additives work.

HPMC Determines Application Efficiency (Workability)

HPMC is responsible for thickening, water retention, and lubrication. High-quality HPMC ensures that the putty spreads smoothly with a trowel without curling at the edges. It also extends the open time for workers.

If the water retention is poor, the putty will dry out too quickly. This fast drying makes the wall highly susceptible to cracking. When a putty cracks early, even the best inherent material strength becomes completely useless. Therefore, HPMC is what makes a product "easy to use."

RDP Determines Long-Term Durability (Quality)

While HPMC works during application, RDP provides long-term protection. Once applied, RDP forms a flexible polymer film network inside the dry putty layer. This network significantly enhances bonding strength, flexibility, water resistance, and impact resistance.

Simply put: RDP is the exact additive that determines whether your wall putty will chalk (shed powder) or peel when exposed to water. It is what makes a product "durable."

The Golden Rule of Formula Optimization

When designing your wall putty formula, follow this rule: First, use HPMC to solve the issue of ease of application; second, use RDP to fulfill the requirement for long-term durability. Neither can be omitted, and this logic cannot be reversed.
