What are the functions of cellulose ethers?

Cellulose ethers: underestimated industrial "panacea"

As a derivative of natural cellulose obtained through etherification reaction, cellulose ethers play a key role in modern industry due to their unique physical and chemical properties. Its main types include methyl cellulose (MC), hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC), etc. Different substituent groups give them differentiated functional performance.

Cellulose ethers are an important construction additive and are widely used in dry-mix mortar formulations. Despite the small dosage, they play an important role in improving mortar properties such as workability, adhesion, water retention and setting time. This makes them indispensable in cement-based flooring, tile, plaster and insulation mortar systems.

Construction Additives Enhanced Water Retention in Dry-Mix Mortars

Water retention is a core function of cellulose ethers in dry-mix mortars, especially in thin-bed applications. Adequate water retention ensures that the cement is fully hydrated and prevents premature drying, cracking or strength loss.

The main influencing factors include:

 Dosage: Increasing the dosage generally improves water retention.

 Viscosity: High viscosity grades, such as HPMC Derekcell, have better moisture retention.

 Fineness: Finer particle size helps improve distribution and water retention.

 Environmental factors: Temperature and humidity affect drying time and retention behavior.

Improve Adhesion and Sag Resistance

Cellulose ethers provide excellent thickening and rheology control in mortars. It enhances vertical adhesion and sag resistance, which is critical for tile adhesives and wall plasters.

 Bond strength: Viscosity affects the performance of adhesives. Higher viscosity improves structural integrity and adhesion.

 Anti-sag properties: Helps mortars hold their shape without sliding on vertical surfaces.

 Application instructions: Too high a viscosity may affect smooth handling or dissolution of tools.

Cellulose ethers, especially Derekcell HPMC, are essential to improving the performance of cement-based floor mortars and other dry mix systems. It improves water retention, adhesion and workability, which directly improves construction efficiency, durability and surface quality. By adding mortar construction additives, professionals can ensure consistent performance and long-term reliability on every project.
